As a way to help our community to get to know Altrusa and it's members better, we are introducing our Monthly Member Spotlight! This months Member Spotlight is on Rita McClure who has been a member for 5 years.
Rita, can you please take a moment to introduce yourself?
I was born and raised here in Gadsden , AL. My husband Ronnie and I have one son, Alan who is married to Heather. Through them we are the proud grandparents of 3 year old Carson Nicole! Ronnie and I will celebrate our 40th anniversary in June of 2020. I am retired from the Etowah County Board of Education where I taught kindergarten for 25 years. I am a proud member of Mt. Caramel Baptist Church that I have attended since I was 2 years old! I am the church organist, choir, and part of the Women's Missionary Union.
How did you hear about Altrusa and how long have you been a member?
After retirement, I was out working in my yard when my neighbor Jane Blackman stopped by. She was an member of Altrusa and she introduced me to the club. Having spent so many years in the educational system, the hallmarks of Altrusa intrested me. Through her, I became a member in 2014.
What do you like most about being a member? Any specific events or activities that stand out to you?
Being able to be contribute to the Dolly Parton Imagination Library was one of my favorite events! Literacy is very important in our country. Through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, children receive a free age appropriate book each month starting at birth to age five!
What do you wish the club did different? Better? Added?
I just wish we could increase our funds in order to reach farther into the community. We have several wonderful fund raising events in store for 2020 and I really hope that the public can come out and support us in these events!
Where do you see the club going in the future?
Increasing memberships and further aiding in our wonderful Gadsden community!
2019 Santa's Workshop and 2nd Annual Home, Garden and Design Show
Our 2019 Santa's Workshop and 2nd Annual Home, Garden and Design Show has finally came to a wrap. After months of hard work on behalf of our Altrusa Members, we had another successful show with close to 700 people through our doors!
Work on our show started in May of this year as we started looking for vendors for our show, and we had a wonderful turn out of over 70 vendors at these two events. Thank you to everyone of you who were able to come out and join us! Then came the designing and marketing side of the show, with billboards, radio ads, and flyers going up through out the area starting in October. The Wednesday before the show, club members Angela Walker and Scott Browning spent the day getting a work out as they taped off vendors booths, a learning experience for the both of them. Finally move in day...if you ever want it to rain in Gadsden, announce a show as big as this and the rains will come! Despite this, our move in day on Thursday was very smooth with vendors staggered throughout the day able to move in their wares and set up their booths. Every vendor took great pride and effort in making sure their booths set up just right. Finally, the day we had all been waiting for. Vendors and club members arrived at The Venue at 8 AM to do last minute touches to their booths and get the doors ready for show open on Friday. Guest were already lining up by 9 AM! And the rest....
...took care of itself.
We again thank all of our vendors who were able to come out and attend this event, we hope you had a wonderful show and we look forward to working with you in our future shows! Thank you to all of our guest who came and shopped with us and mad this event such a success! To our sponsors who took a chance on us and invested in us to help make this show come alive! To The Venue at Coosa Landing for a wonderful space to put this all together again! And to our members who gave up their time working to put all this together and give us a show unlike any other in the Greater Gadsden Area! We can't wait to do it all again in 2020....after we take a break and catch our breath of course!

Well, how about a day filled with other like minded individuals where you can work your crafts in peace for 11 hours?!?! Altrusa International of Gadsden would like to invite you to our 1st Annual Pre-Christmas Charity Crop! This will be a day filled with fun and fellowship that will give you a space to work on all those last minute holiday crafts that you haven't had a chance to get around to. The event will be held Saturday November 16, 2019 at the Down Town Civic Center here in Gadsden. We will be providing meals and snack throughout the day and lots of great door prizes also! Registration for this event is $40 and gives you a six foot table and chair for you to do what ever it is your imagination get away with! So come join us and your fellow crafters for this wonderful event!
As I sit here typing up this months news letter, we are officially 12 days from the opening of our 2nd Annual Home, Garden and Design Show and Santa's Workshop! This month has been a very busy month for us here at Altrusa of Gadsden. So many items checked off our list and more items added to the list. We are working hard to provide our community with a show unlike any other in the Gadsden area! Fall is finally settling into the South also with temperatures dropping down into the 40s and 50s at night! Leafs are finally loosing their grip from their branches and carpeting the ground....which reminds me, I need to rake...
Brown Bag Lunch
Thanks to all of those who participated in our Brown Bag Lunch fundraising event this month! We sold over 100 lunches and raised over $600.00 from this event. Special thanks to Local Joe's BBQ and Cothran's Bakery in providing excellent food and service! Altrusa of Gadsden looks forward to doing more of these events in the near future!
Spina-Bifida Bowl-A-Thon 2019
This past Saturday, members of Altrusa took to the lanes at Paradise Lanes Bowling Alley to participate in this years Spina-Bifida Bowl-A-Thon. This is a wonderful fund raising event held each year to raise money and awareness for those afflicted with spina-bifida, a condition that develops in the fetus that prevents the spine from developing properly. This condition affects around 7 out of every 10,000 births in the United States. Altrusa members have supported this cause for 12 years now and look forward to continuing this tradition!
So let's talk Show....
As I stated earlier, we are 12 days away from opening the doors to the Venue for the 2nd Annual Home, Garden and Design Show! We are working very hard to make this show unlike anything seen in the Gadsden City/Etowah County area!
First off, this show takes up the ENTIRE area of The Venue at Coosa Landing! That is 75,000 square feet of space! Currently we have over 60 vendors ready to set up and that number climbs daily. Altrusa is making sure we fill as much as this space as possible and provide visitors with a huge variety of vendors to choose from.
Secondly, with over 60 vendors, we have something for everyone! Furniture, landscape, boutiques, food and so much more! Long Furniture will be on site with theater seating streaming the games! We will have Workman Reflections on Saturday taking pictures with Santa! And there are still secrets to be shared as we approach the actual show date, so stay tuned!
Finally, this is an awesome way to give back to the community! Remember, this is Altrusa of Gadsden's BIGGEST fund raising event. Every dollar we make here will go back into the community in some form. So why not come out and join us 01-02 November 2019 from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM at The Venue at Coosa Landing!
Altrusa's First Annual Charity Crop
We've got so much going on here at Altrusa of Gadsden that we don't know if we are coming, going or already gone! It is such an exciting time for us, knowing that everything we are working hard for will soon come to fruition. I want to take a moment to fill you in on all that is going on!
Brown Bag Lunch
Home, Garden & Design Show and Santa's Workshop
I bet you all didn't know we are getting ready to host our 2nd Annual Home, Garden and Design Show and Santa's Workshop did you? If you or someone you love has some how missed all my previous posts, let me fill you in now!
This is our BIGGEST fundraising event in Gadsden! For 50 years, Altrusa of Gadsden has hosted an Annual Antique Show. As times have changed, so have we. So in 2018 we launched our first Home, Garden, & Design Show. We had over sixty vendors at this event and had over 1,500 visitors through our doors! With so much success last year, we immediately decided that we wanted to it all again this year. So, 01-02 November 2019, we will again open our doors for the 2nd Annual Home, Garden, & Design Show. This event will be held again at The Venue at Coosa Landing. Now, I know there are the football fans out there who are thinking "My team is playing, no way am I going to go!". Well, guess what? We thought of you also! Long Furniture will have the stage at The Venue set up with stadium seating and will be broadcasting the game(s) through out The Venue! So come out and kick back and enjoy the game on the big screens.
We also decided to do things a bit different this year...call us crazy....no really, we are crazy...this year, it is TWO SHOWS in one! That is right! While the Home Show will be going on in the Main Hall at The Venue, we will be hosting our first annual Santa's Workshop in the Meeting Halls right next door! Santa's Workshop will have a host of vendors from throughout the area including Pink Zebra, The Atticy Collection, Pampered Chef, and so many more! We have a vendor selling custom made Christmas ornaments, children's books and...we are going to have SANTA! He is make a drip down extra early for us this year in order to be with us. More Than A Memory Photography will be on hand to take photos with Santa, so this will be an awesome time to get your Holiday Photos taken and marked off the "To Do List".
Separating the event will be Candy Cane Lane which will feature a variety of food vendors including Momo's Cakes and Tea Town Alabama. There will be something for every sweet tooth for sure!
What can you do!?!
Curios as to how you can help during this hectic time at Altrusa? Well, there are lots of ways you can participate:
1) Don't forget to order your bag lunch! Who knew eating could help?
2) Become a Sponsor! We offer sponsorship's for the show starting at $50.00 and will provide you with a custom banner that we will display through out The Venue during our show. An easy and affordable way for you to promote your business.
3) Become a Vendor! We still have a few spaces left on both sides of the show and we offer very competitive rates for booth spaces.
4) Attend the Shows! Come shop, dine, and enjoy the game! Show dates are 01-02 November doors opening from 9 AM to 6 PM. Tickets will be on sale for $10.00 and gains access to both shows.
5) Become a Member! We are always open to new members here at Altrusa International Inc of Gadsden and we love to teach people more about what we do. So if you are looking for a good way to volunteer your time, we are happy to have you join us!
So if any of the above seems interesting to you, then send us a shout out, we would love to hear from you!
The "bers" are upon us! Unfortunately, Mother Nature has not quite decided to let go of Summer yet, so we are still heating 100 degree temperatures here in Alabama. Meanwhile in New York, highs are in the "low 80s". If it wasn't for the lack of sweet tea and my love for my Altrusa family here, I would be up North next week! We have had a very productive couple of weeks here, so let's get into it.
Home, Garden, and Design Show/Santa's Workshop
Vendors are getting contracts in as we speak. Santa's Workshop is almost filled, so if you are interested in being a vendor at this show, please let us know ASAP! Submit information here or email email@example.com. The Home, Garden and Design Show still has some spaces left, so please, if you are interested in being a vendor at this show, contact us here or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
We will soon begin to launch our advertising campaign for both shows! We will have billboards going up through out the area, advertisements going into theaters, and flyers for businesses to place in their store windows. Thanks to member Jerri Timm for her great designs!
Member's Work Days for Upcoming Events
We have several great events coming up that require member participation! I have created a member sign up sheet here, so all Altrusa members please log on and look to see what dates they will able to work and what position. As a way to help our community to get to know Altrusa and it's members better, we are introducing our Monthly Member Spotlight! This month's Member Spotlight is on Ami Hardy who has been a member for 2 years.
Ami, can you please take a moment to introduce yourself?
Hi! My name is Ami Hardy. My family and I live in Rainbow City, AL. My husband, Rickey, and I have 3 children: Rickey, Jr., Breanna, and Jacob. As our children got older (only 1 left at home now), I apparently began to subconsciously fear empty nest syndrome. Therefore, we now have four cats (Chino, Gatsby, Maisey, and Trouble) and a dog named Diesel. So as you can see, we have been cured by fur!
I work for Scott Logistics Corporation as a logistics coordinator. We are a freight brokerage group. When you buy from Amazon, Chewy, Kroger or even Bargain Hunt, I may have negotiated with the trucking company to get the products to the store.
How did you hear about Altrusa and how long have you been a member?
It all started with an invitation to Game Night 2 years ago. My best friend, Angela Walker (our current president) invited me and I had a blast with the ladies in the group that night! I also remember my mom and her best friend talking about Altrusa when I was younger. If my memory serves correctly, the two of them helped decorate some events for the club years ago, however they were never members.
What do you like most about being a member? Any specific events or activities that stand out to you?
I love being a member of Altrusa! I love that we work together while having a great time to do things and give back to our community. I like that one of my fellow members was also my kindergarten teacher, and I've gotten to share with her as an adult, many of the life rules she thought me years ago. I also enjoy being in the club with my best friend, Angela, while making new friends along the way. I love being a part of such an amazing group of people! It's almost impossible to pick just one event or activity that we have done was my favorite. I loved the Home, Garden and Design Show last year (and I can't wait for it to come around again this year), and I enjoyed listening to LaDonna Gatlin sing at the Women's Show as well.
What do you feel you bring to the Club?
Well, I've been told I make a mean pineapple upside down cake. Seriously, though, I like to think that I bring a servant's heart, a willing hand, and a smile to the club. I feel like every member possess those traits though. So maybe they just like me for my cake?!?
What do you wish the Club did different? Better? Added?
Maybe I am biased, but I think our club is really good! The only thing I would change is to add more members. Y'all are missing out on a great chance to have some fun and give back to our community at the same time! What are you waiting for? Come join us!
Where do you see the Club going in the future?
Bigger and better than ever!
One of my favorite things about being a member of Altrusa is the fact that we give so much back to the community. Everything we raise goes back into our communities in some way. Last year, Alstrua of Gadsden donated five read wagons filled with toys and books to the Children's Hospital in Birmingham. The wagons will be used to transport patients between their rooms and appointments through out the hospital. Books and toys will be used to help entertain patients and siblings of patients who might be stuck in a waiting room. Altrusa also provided Christmas and Back-to-School supplies for local children in the area this past year.
All this is made possible by the fundraising we do throughout the year. We take grade pride in all the events that we do and are constantly looking for ways to improve on what we do. For 50 years, Altrusa hosted it's Annual Antique Show with great success. Then as 40 years rolled into 45 years and 45 years into 50 years, we began to see that the days of Antique Shows was coming to a close. So in 2017 we celebrated our Golden Anniversary and without further ado, we thanked our loyal vendors and guest, and closed the door on the final Antique Show.
Our Antique Show was our BIGGEST fundraising event for those 50 years, so closing the doors meant a huge loss of revenue to Altrusa of Gadsden. This also meant it was time to do a make over and come up with a new idea that could recover the loss. Enter the Home, Garden and Design Show! In 2018 we launched our 1st Annual Home, Garden and Design Show with over 75 different business and vendors set up inside The Venue at Coosa Landing. We had over 1500 guest come through our doors for this event! Money that we raised from vendor fees and ticket sales again, ALL WENT BACK INTO THE COMMUNITY! The Home, Garden and Design Show was such a success for both us and the vendors, that we have brought it back again this year for the 2nd Annual Home, Garden, and Design Show. This year, we are branching out even further and hosting our Santa's Workshop. Both of these events will be held 01-02 November 2019 at The Venue at Coosa Landing. If you are interested in becoming a vendor at either of these events, you can request information by going to our Events page and clicking on the show of your choice and requesting more information.
The Home, Garden and Design Show and Santa's Workshop is our two biggest fundraising events that Altrusa International Inc. of Gadsden hosts. However, in between these events, we are also looking at other ways to raise funds. Currently we have our Cutest Pets Fall 2019 Contest going on! Registration for this event is $25.00 per pet and contestants are entering a chance to win a $250.00 cash prize! Again, ALL PROCEEDS FROM THIS EVENT GO BACK INTO THE COMMUNITY!!! So if you are someone you know has what they think is the Cutest Pet, please submit a photo and register at our Cutest Pets Registration page and don't forget to vote for who you think is the cutest pet! Along with this, at the end of September Altrusa of Gadsden will be selling Brown Bag Lunches for $10.00 each. Each bag will contain a BBQ sandwich provided by Local Joe's BBQ, a bag of chips and desert. Bags will be available for pick up or delivery based on location. And again, ALL PROCEEDS FROM THIS EVENT GO BACK INTO THE COMMUNITY!!!
So there you have it, those are just some of the ideas that we have come up with. We want to hear from you the community to find out what other events that you would like to see in the area that Altrusa of Gadsden could help with. Want to see a fun run? How about a cake walk? Or maybe you are just interested in donating your time? What ever way you come up with, we will be happy to hear from you. So comment below or submit us a line at our Contact Page. We are happy to hear from you!
Spina Bifida Bowl-A-Thon 2019
It is that time of year again! Time to kick off our Sunday shoes and put on our bowling shoes! That is right, it is time for the 2019 Spina Bifida Bowl-A-Thon! This is an annual event that is sponsored by the Spina Bifida Association of Gadsden to raise money an awareness about Spina Bifida. Altrusa International Inc. of Gadsden has been a proud sponsor of this association for several years, not only through monetary donations, but also by sponsoring a bowling team for the event. This years Bowl-A-Thon will be held on October 19, 2019 at the Paradise Lanes Bowling Center in Gadsden, AL. Registration will start at 12:00 PM and we will start to bowl at 1:00 PM.
So, what exactly is Spina Bifida? Let's look at some facts:
So, are you an Altrusa member who would like to participate in this years Bowl-A-Thon? Please contact your Service Committee member Scott Browning and let him know you are participating. Cut off for registration will be October 1, 2019.
Are you a member of the community who is interested in Altrusa or learning more about Spina Bifida and would like a day of fun and fellowship? We would love to hear from you also and have you join us! You can contact Scott Browning and he will gladly provide you with more information. Cut off for registration will be October 1, 2019.
We hope to see you on the lanes!!!
Home, Garden and Design Show/Santa's Workshop
So if you are a first time visitor to our site or you are a member and have heard this all before, it is, as always, time to talk Home, Garden and Design Show/Santa's Workshop.
This year, Altrusa International Inc. of Gadsden will be hosting two shows in one. Our 2nd Annual Home, Garden and Design Show will be a repeat of last years show in which we will host a variety of vendors from through out the area. The focus on this show will be, well, home, garden and design of course. We have several wonderful vendors signed up already including Plumbers Wholesale, Long Furniture, Leaf Guard, Champion Windows, Miller Sand and, new to us this year, Network Solutions. This event will take place in the North and South Halls at The Venue at Coosa Landing. Directly across from this, in the Meeting Halls, we will be hosting our 1st Annual Santa's Workshop. Vendors in this area will be decked out to kick off the Christmas shopping season! There will be clothing, jewelry, make-up and so much more! Santa will be on site for kids to get their pictures made also! Separating the two events, in the corridor, will be Candy Cane Lane where vendors here will have something to satisfy everyone's sweet tooth!
These two shows are the biggest fund raising events for Altrusa International Inc. of Gadsden. The proceeds from the vendor fees, sponsorship fees, and ticket sales all go back into our community and into our International Service Project. Last year, Altrusa used from the show to purchase gifts for needy families and also Red Wagons for Children's Hospital of Birmingham. Vendors will find that we offer very competitive booth fees for a show of this type. Guest will find ticket prices to be very affordable and a very enjoyable atmosphere. And again, proceeds go back into the community!
So how can you help in these events? There are several methods that you will find that will aide us in making these shows a success:
So that is it! Reach out to us and let us know you are interested in participating and we will gladly give you more details! Below are some video tours of last years 1st Annual Home, Garden and Design Show. This year, we plan to go even bigger!
In case you missed it, this past weekend Altrusa International Inc. of Gadsden hosted this years annual Workshop! We had such a wonderful time planning and preparing for this event. We had over 50 members from through out District Four attend the event! District Four includes the states of Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee.
We would like to extend a special thanks to the following individuals and businesses that helped us with this event:
Thank you to all members who were able to join us this weekend and we look forward to events like these in the future!
August...the time of year when everything starts coming out in Pumpkin Spice flavor (they even have Pumpkin Spice Spam this year...someone tell me how that turned out please!), the leaves start to change color and the temperatures begin to cool. That is, unless you are in the South. Specifically, Alabama in August. We had our highest temperatures of the year this week, with highs in the 100s and the heat index even higher! Speaking of the heat index, why don't we just call it as it is...HOT!!! I myself am an AC type of guy. This week, I was thankful that our monthly meeting was held in the Tea Room at the Downtown Civic Center where the temperature inside was a cool 70 degrees.
This month's meeting was our Friends and Family Night! This is a time when current members invite their friends, family and prospective members to join us for food, fellowship, and BINGO!!!! It was great night had by all and we had some awesome prizes for our game night. If you missed out this year, it is not to early to mark your calendar for next year! We would love to have you, and if you are interested in becoming a member, please be sure to send us a message. We are always looking for new members to help in our goals!
Are you ready for Workshop?
Vendors, Vendors, and Vendors!
Guess what is just over two months away!?!?! If you are not thinking Home, Garden and Design Show and Santa's Workshop, please start thinking about it two months ago! Space is filling up, but we still could use some more vendors. Here is a list of possible vendors, so if you know someone in any of these areas that might be interested, please have them contact either Angela Walker or Scott Browning. They can also contact us here on our website.
We need vendors from the following areas:
So send them our way and let's have another wonderful show! Remember, show dates are 01 & 02 November 2019. Set up date will be 31 October. This event is again held at the The Venue at Coosa Landing.
I am Scott Browning and I am the newest member of Altrusa International of Gadsden, however, I have been a volunteer of theirs for a while now. I became a member because I wanted to do something to give back to my community. I look forward to what I can contribute to the club my many talents and time.
