Remember where you were on December 31, 1999? Myself I was in a small chapel in the woods waiting for the clock to roll to midnight and prepared for the dooms day known as Y2K to start. As midnight struck and the calendar rolled over to a new century, I let out a sigh of relief as the lights didn't so much as flicker and humanity marched on. Then their was 2012 and the Mayan calendar was coming to a close. We all waited and held breath as the days quickly approached and then went....all the while humanity marched on.
Then came 2020....the year that took 50 years to end. We started with wildfires in Australia. Then their was rumors of a new flu virus. By March of 2020, much of the world had began to shut down. Borders where closed and international travel came to a halt. People were advised to shelter in place, to only go out if it were essential. COVID-19 had a grasp on the world. Next came the killer hornets...because if it just wasn't bad enough to go outside, why not killer hornets? Summer came and went....and we will not even go into the politics. Momma said there are two things you don't discuss...religion and politics. So we will just put on our best smiles and just agree to love one another. Now we are almost through November and there is yet ANOTHER hurricane building in the tropics. Maybe this is the year we will have a white Christmas in Alabama...I hope for at least a foot. It is almost like the Mayans were just a bit off in their calculations. However, humanity is marching, slowly and carefully, on.
The year has taken a lot out of all of us, including us here at Altrusa. Monthly meetings ended or went to phone calls or Zoom meetings. We sadly had to cancel our 2020 Santa's Workshop and Home, Garden, and Design Show. But we too will march on. We have a LOT in store for 2021! We plan to restart meetings in January. They might be smaller and they will be fewer hugs given, but in order to march on, we have to be able to enjoy the fellowship that our meetings offer. We are currently working on our 1st Annual Easter Emporium, which will offer the same great vendors that we have at our Santa's Workshop, with the addition of several new vendors! We have also redesigned our Home Show into the Home, Garden and Outdoor Show, and will be introducing this in the spring of 2021. We look to expand our membership in the coming year. Many hands does mighty work. So if you are interested in becoming a member, drop us a line. We also have several other fundraising ideas in the works for 2021 also, so look for those in the near future.
As for now....we march on!
I am Scott Browning and I am the newest member of Altrusa International of Gadsden, however, I have been a volunteer of theirs for a while now. I became a member because I wanted to do something to give back to my community. I look forward to what I can contribute to the club my many talents and time.
